Congratulations Cory Crawford
Congratulations to Sanctuary Cove Golf and Country Club Member Cory Crawford on winning the first professional event of his career following a thrilling six-hole playoff against fellow Queenslander Brett Rankin at the SP Brewery PNG Golf Open.
Cory finished regulation play at 10 under par matching Brett. The pair went head to head for the PNG Open trophy with Cory prevailing in a marathon 6-hole playoff at Royal Port Moresby Golf Club. The pair could not be separated through the first five playoff holes on the par 3 18th, with both making par on all attempts. On the sixth attempt, Cory made par for his first victory on the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia. For his win, Cory is now on the Tour’s Order of Merit including full exemption until the end of 2018.
Last week was a great week dominated by Sanctuary Cove golfers, with Anthony Quayle finishing outright third and Adam Stephens tied fifth.

The Pines Golf Course Renovations
On Monday 30 October, The Pines golf course will be closed for renovations for seven days and will re-open on Monday 6 November. The Board has decided to close the course for an additional two days this year to ensure all renovations are completed without interruption and to give Members their Saturday golf competition on a non-renovated, well presented golf course.
The Saturday Members’ competition for both the Men and Ladies will now be held on The Palms golf course on Saturday 4 November. Social play will be available on The Palms golf course on Sunday 5 November while The Pines golf course remains closed. The Pines golf course will re-open for play on Monday 6 November 2017.
We appreciate your patience throughout the renovation period.
Raking bunkers is not only a very important part of golf course etiquette, but raking bunkers correctly ensures you and other golfers following have the best possible lie when playing out of both fairway and greenside bunkers. To rake bunkers correctly, the below steps should be followed:
Step 1: When playing a bunker shot, ensure you enter the bunker at a low point or flat area, to avoid disruption or damage to the face of the bunker.
Step 2: After playing the shot, begin raking the sand over the areas disrupted by footprints and by the divot where the ball lay. Rake the sand towards you ensuring you don’t rake too much sand. The goal is to leave the sand as flat and even as possible when you exit the bunker.
Step 3: When leaving the bunker, ensure all footmarks and divots are raked and place the rake on a flat spot in the bunker, facing the direction in which the hole is played. This will reduce the chance of a ball coming to rest in a bad lie next to the rake.
The next Social Sunday Golf event will be played on The Pines golf course on Sunday 14 May in a 12pm shotgun start. The day’s format will be a Skins Event, an enjoyable four-person team event, for which bookings are now available via the online tee sheet.
Skins tournaments have always been very popular at the Club, with over $5,000 worth of prizes on offer again for this upcoming competition.

Lemon Tip from Jamie-Lee Goodger
Lemons are one of the most versatile citrus fruits, but getting the liquid you need from lemons can be a difficult task. Even extracting half a cup of juice can take a few lemons.
I recommend microwaving your lemons prior to squeezing them to help get all the juice out easily. Warming up the fruit for 15-20 seconds softens its insides. This allows you to extract the most lemon juice from the fruit that you can, saving you time and money. Just remember to let the lemon cool for a minute before you start slicing.
This trick works on oranges, too.

Michael Jones – It’s more than just a Game
Golf brings people together. As my students Norika Tsukamoto and Isabelle Taylor found out on the recent long weekend, golf’s a great way to spend an afternoon, share a story and enjoy some fun moments.
Preparing to compete in the women’s interstate series next week as part of the Queensland team, 16-year-old Isabelle played 9 holes with my newest student, 18-year-old Norika, who has relocated from Japan to spend time in Australia improving her golf game.
A big fan of Japanese culture, Isabelle picked up a few new Japanese phrases including “sugoi”, meaning “wow”, when Norika birdied the 4th hole par 3.
Well done, Girls. It’s great to see you playing good golf and enjoying the afternoon.
