The 2017 Sanctuary Cove Easter Tournament began on Thursday evening with 80 Members and guests attending a welcome Cocktail Party.  A selection of canapés as well as wine and champagne made for a relaxed start to the weekend.

Good Friday saw the Walker Cup played on The Pines golf course with players competing in a 4-Person Ambrose event, which Mr Keith Walker started in 1990. The event continues to grow each year, with a field of 152 players looking to add their names to the Walker Cup trophy for 2017. A beautiful day and a pristine golf course greeted players, and the team of Paul Smerdon, Brian Williams, Faye Williams and Wendy De Santis took advantage of the perfect conditions with an amazing score of 54.5 to be narrow winners over Glen Thomson, Russell Beasley, Peter McLaren and Joel McGuane.  The day finished with an amazing seafood buffet served in the Clubhouse, which included an array of hot and cold dishes as well as a huge Easter Egg display and a 2kg chocolate bunny.

Day one of the Jabiru Cup was contested on The Palms golf course on Easter Sunday.  Felicity Baird (41 points) and John Lee (38 points) led the individual scoring and the team of Felicity Baird, Shannon Moore, Karron McComb and John Lewty were leading the teams event.  Day two of The Jabiru Cup was contested on The Pines golf course, with all players vying for an elusive Hole in One and the chance to win a Mercedes-Benz car, kindly sponsored by Mercedes-Benz Gold Coast.  Whilst no Hole in One was recorded, Lloyd Dorrington came very close with an amazing shot to within 8cm of the hole. Play on day two saw the continuation of great scores on course, in particular Peter Leeson (38 points) and Karron McComb (36 points).  Congratulations to Peter Leeson and Felicity Baird for winning the 36-hole individual event. After holding a slender lead on day one, Felicity Baird, Shannon Moore, Karron McComb and John Lewty continued their remarkable play with a convincing win in the 2017 Jabiru Cup.

On Thursday 27 April, the Club will be holding the first Members’ Information Evening for 2017 in Lakeview Bar. The evening will provide the Board of Directors the opportunity to discuss 2016 results, 2017 results year-to-date, the remainder of the year and general business.

Importantly, there will also be an opportunity for Members to ask questions through an open Q & A forum. The Board requests that the opportunity to raise any matters relating to the Club are raised at this meeting, not at the Sanctuary Cove Golf and Country Club Holdings AGM on Thursday 4 May 2017.

Please see below an extract from the Queensland Government Office of Liquor and Gaming Regulation regarding ANZAC Day trading conditions:

From 9am to 1pm on ANZAC Day, liquor may only be sold or supplied in conjunction with a meal in a part of the premises that is ordinarily set aside for dining, if the meal is also prepared, served and intended to be eaten on the premises.

After 1pm on ANZAC Day, normal liquor trading hours and conditions apply.

On Tuesday 2 May 2017, the Golf Course Maintenance team will be completing the annual process of over sowing The Pines greens.

The greens will be over sown with Poa Trivialis in preparation for winter, providing the following benefits:

  • More aesthetically appealing
  • Improved playing surface
  • Consistent coverage across all greens
  • Greater shade toleration

While the process ensures the greens’ condition remains exceptional throughout the winter months, it can attract large quantities of birdlife due to the vast amount of seed required for over sowing.

This phase is anticipated to cease in a short period of time, during which your patience is appreciated.

Raking bunkers is not only a very important part of golf course etiquette, but raking bunkers correctly ensures you and other golfers following have the best possible lie when playing out of both fairway and greenside bunkers. To rake bunkers correctly, the below steps should be followed:

Step 1: When playing a bunker shot, ensure you enter the bunker at a low point or flat area, to avoid disruption or damage to the face of the bunker.

Step 2: After playing the shot, begin raking the sand over the areas disrupted by footprints and by the divot where the ball lay. Rake the sand towards you ensuring you don’t rake too much sand.  The goal is to leave the sand as flat and even as possible when you exit the bunker.

Step 3: When leaving the bunker, ensure all footmarks and divots are raked and place the rake on a flat spot in the bunker, facing the direction in which the hole is played.  This will reduce the chance of a ball coming to rest in a bad lie next to the rake.

The next event on the Social Sunday calendar is the Canadian Foursomes competition, to be played on Sunday 30 April.

Canadian Foursomes
This event is for two (2) players. It is played as per a normal foursomes event, except that both players play tee shots at every hole and afterwards continue with whichever ball they nominate, with the partner playing the second stroke and both players playing alternate shots until the ball is holed. Handicap allowance is ⅜ of aggregate stroke handicap. No limit on the drives taken.

For those players whose partners do not play golf, a register is now available in the Golf Shop for any Member seeking a partner for mixed events.

Following golf, enjoy Sunday Casual Dining in Lakeview Bar, as well as the Weekly Members’ Draw.

Dinner bookings will be taken prior to the event in the Golf Shop.

Good to Know
The size of your lawn and the frequency of mowing will dictate how often you should sharpen or replace your blades. Look at a grass blade after mowing; if it’s shredded or frayed, it’s time to sharpen it.

This Sunday, there will be one chance to find a winner. In order to claim the Members’ Draw, the winner must be present in Lakeview Bar at the time of the draw. If the winner is not present, the draw will jackpot to $1,600 Club Credit next week with two chances to win.
