Line_Grey_1200Golf-Australia-LogoGolf Australia Survey

The Club recently received the below information which we would encourage Members to complete so our Club along with all other clubs in Australia can keep up to date with all handicapping systems.

Internet Surveys on World Handicap System and Modernisation of the Rules of Golf

Golf’s international governing bodies are the R&A and the United States Golf Association.  They, in consultation with Golf Australia, are working on two major initiatives that will directly impact all Australian golfers – a modernisation of the Rules of Golf, and a World Handicap System.
The R&A and USGA are conducting internet surveys on these two subjects.  The two internet surveys are available from www.golf.org.au/have-your-say.  Each survey can be completed in about 10 minutes.  In addition, a pop-up message promoting these surveys will be presented to all users of the Golf Australia website for a two-week period which commenced Monday 24 July.
We would encourage as many Australian club administrators and golfers as possible to do these surveys.  Responses to the handicapping survey will be very helpful in informing Golf Australia’s ultimate position on the World Handicap System.  Note that questions in the handicapping survey will identify whether the response is being provided by an administrator or a player.
We would also encourage you to promote these surveys directly to your members – this is their chance to have their say on these two important topics.  It would be best to do this promotion before 7 August in order to ensure all responses receive appropriate consideration by the R&A, USGA, and Golf Australia.

Line_Grey_1200Ladies' Christmas in JulyLadies’ Christmas in July

The day began with very cold conditions over a fun format of Lone Ranger plus two scores.  After a cool start to the day, a gorgeous winter day greeted the Ladies and good scoring was there for the taking.

The team of Biv Gilson, Agnes Dekok-Smith, Elizabeth Stanley-Hunt and Agnes Bowyer combined beautifully to win the day with an amazing score of 119 to be one shot winners over Kimberley Robinson, Chris Lynam, Marion Coy and Laurie Barron. HOME-LAWN-CAREPaul McLeanWinter Lawn Tip

It is good practice during the winter to prune any overhanging or overgrown trees/plants in your garden so you can create more sunlight onto your lawn. Grass requires a minimum of 6-8 hours of bright sunshine to survive and any less than this will result in dieback and loss of turf.

coursecareRaking Bunkers

Raking bunkers is not only a very important part of golf course etiquette, but raking bunkers correctly ensures you and other golfers following have the best possible lie when playing out of both fairway and greenside bunkers. To rake bunkers correctly, the below steps should be followed:

Step 1: When playing a bunker shot, ensure you enter the bunker at a low point or flat area, to avoid disruption or damage to the face of the bunker.

Step 2: After playing the shot, begin raking the sand over the areas disrupted by footprints and by the divot where the ball lay. Rake the sand towards you ensuring you don’t rake too much sand.  The goal is to leave the sand as flat and even as possible when you exit the bunker.

Step 3: When leaving the bunker, ensure all footmarks and divots are raked and place the rake on a flat spot in the bunker, facing the direction in which the hole is played.  This will reduce the chance of a ball coming to rest in a bad lie next to the rake.

Golf-professionalsmatt-ballardMatt Ballard

Many of you have sought putting lessons with me recently asking how to improve your speed on the greens. I have seen concerns with speed issues as the greens are slower than normal on The Pines during winter. My hope is that you can use these few simple tips below straight away during your next competition round. These aren’t physically or mechanically related to your putting stroke.

  •  Early morning dew and moisture will slow the greens down, subsequently when greens are dry and void of moisture typically they will be faster.
  • Slope: your ability to gauge that your putt is going uphill may seem simple to many but for some players simply recognising this is overlooked. By feeling with your feet if your putt is going uphill or not can assist you hitting the putt with correct speed. To do this well, you must ensure you view your putt from the side (midpoint on the low side between the hole and your ball). This angle is reminiscent of how you would read a book: it gives you a great vantage point to see and feel all the terrain in front of you.
  • Grain: many players think this plays a bigger part than it actually does. I can tell you that slope/gradient has a far greater effect on the speed and break of your putt than grain ever will. Contrary to many people’s beliefs, grain grows downhill, not to setting sun or to towards the ocean. I see too many people overemphasise the influence of the grain and its effect it has on your ball. Grain will have an effect on the amount the putt breaks but only during its last 2 feet of the roll as the putt loses momentum, not prior.

My final thoughts for you to remember: the grain of grass grows downhill and will make the ball travel faster and break more. Putting uphill will make the ball break less and become slower. This may sound obvious to most but it must be taken into consideration if you wish to improve your speed control.

So, in parting, if you have ever hit a putt that didn’t break as much as you thought, it’s likely because you are putting uphill.

I hope these little notes will help you assess your putts more effectively and putt better as a result.

If you want to learn more about green reading I would be more than happy to help. Keep in mind green reading is a skill just like any other part of your game that can be learned.

Good golfing
