Line_Grey_1200IMG_6191Golf Club Entrance Garden – Jabiru

A Jabiru statue has recently landed in the front entry garden of the Clubhouse.  The Jabiru is considered folklore around Sanctuary Cove with the occasional Jabiru sighting on The Pines golf course which is very rare for this part of Australia.

The Men’s Captain of Golf, Paul Smerdon, spent countless hours helping design the new front entrance garden and his tireless work didn’t stop there.  Paul researched the possibility of having a Jabiru sculpture IMG_6194designed and found a local artist to assist.  The Jabiru pictured has over 900 pieces of steel welded together and will rust up nicely over a period of time to a burnt orange colour.  The Jabiru completes the garden and is even more stunning under the night light.

A special thank you to Paul Smerdon for all his time and effort on this project, it is greatly appreciated.

coursecareRaking Bunkers

Raking bunkers is not only a very important part of golf course etiquette, but raking bunkers correctly ensures you and other golfers following have the best possible lie when playing out of both fairway and greenside bunkers. To rake bunkers correctly, the below steps should be followed:

Step 1: When playing a bunker shot, ensure you enter the bunker at a low point or flat area, to avoid disruption or damage to the face of the bunker.

Step 2: After playing the shot, begin raking the sand over the areas disrupted by footprints and by the divot where the ball lay. Rake the sand towards you ensuring you don’t rake too much sand.  The goal is to leave the sand as flat and even as possible when you exit the bunker.

Step 3: When leaving the bunker, ensure all footmarks and divots are raked and place the rake on a flat spot in the bunker, facing the direction in which the hole is played.  This will reduce the chance of a ball coming to rest in a bad lie next to the rake.

FITNESS-TIPScreen Shot 2017-07-01 at 10.05.28 amStatic or Dynamic Stretching?

There is a selection of research out there now to show that static stretching is not useful for a warm-up routine as it can reduce power output! This is a physical attribute that all golfers want to maintain for as long as possible for their driving off the tee and long game. There are various papers that have shown that dynamic stretching can increase jump test height and power output with increases of up to 14% across studies.  Hadad et al (2014) reported that even 24 hours after dynamic stretching there was still a 1.6% increase in power output! This research is very relevant to golf because the forces that we create and transfer through the clubhead, start by pressing into the ground as they do in a jump test.

Power is not the only area to suffer as a result of static stretching. Fowles et al. (2000) showed that strength is also reduced immediately after the stretch by up to 28% and still by 9% an hour later! So, completing static stretching at home before you head to the golf club to tee off can actually reduce your performance!

The research conducted by Langdown and Wells together with Sean Graham (Applied Golf Management Studies graduate from University of Birmingham, UK) and Dr Bridge has shown for the first time that compared to just turning up to a range and hitting golf balls, a specific dynamic or even resisted warm-up can significantly improve your performance on the golf course.

Golf-professionalsimage1Michael Jones

I am really proud of my student Isabelle Taylor after her effort in the Toyota World Junior Cup in Nagoya, Japan last week.  Below is a brief article from Golf Australia.

The Australian team earnt reward for its impressive effort today, charging home to share third place at the World Junior Championship in Japan.
Led by Queenslander Isabelle Taylor, the young Aussie team rebounded superbly from a disappointing third round to card a combined one-under score, the team’s best for the week.
It enabled Australia to leap back past South Africa and into a share of third with Italy at seven over for the week. The American team won overall, fending off Japan with a four-under final round to reach -12, five clear of the host in second place.
Taylor, of Sanctuary Cove on the Gold Coast, could have been excused for a lesser effort after her third-round  80 on the Chukyo Golf Club’s Ishino Course, east of Nagoya.
But the ever-improving 16-year-old is made of sterner stuff and pushed hard all day, making some incredible par saves when the tide seemed to be turning against her.
Taylor’s rewards came with birdies on five, eight and nine, then again on 14. But she saved her best until last in a superb three-under-par round of 69 that left her in 10th place individually at eight over for the week.
She hammered a drive 260m into what coach Dean Kinney described as a “seemingly unreachable bunker” off the 18th tee.
“She was faced with a 65-yard bunker shot off a downslope over water with water over the green,” Kinney said.
“I asked her, `What are you thinking here?’ and she responded, `I am just going to hit it on the green’.
“And she did – to about 15 feet – an incredible shot, probably the shot of the tournament.”

Well done Issy and thanks to Golf Australia and all of the support from Sanctuary Cove Golf and Country Club.

Line_Grey_1200Royal-Freemantle900Royal Fremantle Golf Club

For those Members planning a trip to Western Australia, be sure to include a round of golf at our affiliate club Royal Fremantle Golf Club in your itinerary.

Royal Fremantle is one of the few golf clubs that still occupies its original site. The course can be tamed on a still day but when the prevailing sea breeze, colloquially called the “Fremantle Doctor”, arrives after midday, only the best swings survive.

Royal Fremantle, at 6168m, is not long by modern standards. Plans are in place to lengthen some tees as part of regular course maintenance and development plans but this will be done only in keeping with the original intentions; to provide a course for all players and to encourage participation in the sport. Royal Fremantle is not solely about providing a championship venue for professional tournament play to be utilised once a year. The course is well maintained with tidy tee boxes, clearly defined Kikuyu fairways that are amongst the best in the country all year round and Bent grass greens that are deceptively quick. However, when a shot goes astray the penalty is fair and there is always a chance to manufacture a shot from under the trees to get the ball back into play.

Royal Fremantle Golf Club is a beautiful Members’ style golf club that you will truly enjoy. Green fees are $70 per Member including cart hire, with a maximum of five rounds per year permitted.

Upon booking a round of golf at a reciprocal or affiliate golf club, please contact Ashleigh Blacksell to request your letter of introduction.
